Reparations: A Path to Healing:
As we take time to celebrate Freedom Day this weekend, we are also reminded of the lasting effects of slavery in our country. This year, we are recognizing Juneteenth with discussions around the importance of reparations in 2021. Join us Thursday and Friday as we consider whether reparations for slavery are a necessity and what they could look like in our country.
JOIN MARGARET MITCHELL THURSDAY!:
Once we know how much damage has been done, how do we begin to move forward and heal? We believe that reparations are a key piece of the answer. This Thursday at 4:30 PM, join Reparations: a Path to Healing, a discussion with Margaret Mitchell and the Cleveland Public Library about the long history of reparations, how some communities have already implemented reparations on a smaller scale, and the landmark piece of legislation (House Bill 40), which, if passed, would establish a federal commission to study and develop reparations proposals and begin a national reckoning and a path towards restorative justice. JOIN DR. TIFFANY MCDOWELL FRIDAY!:
On Friday, join us for the third conversation in our Go LIVE for Equity Series! Tune in on the 18th at 10:00 AM as Margaret Mitchell interviews Dr. Tiffany McDowell, the Director of YWCA Evanston's Equity Institute. We will be discussing reparations and the city of Evanston, Illinois' journey as the first U.S. city to issue slavery reparations and how YWCA Evanston helped lead the movement.
